Spelling

We are learning how to spell!

The spelling lists are for students to memorize what we call "high frequency" words such as: the, they, that, one, on, said, came, because, etc. All these appear in text over and over again which means that the sooner students learn them the smoother their reading will be because they will be able to read them automatically. The spelling lists also contain words that are not easy to spell by only sounding out for example: because, who, came (the question is always, does it start with a c or a k?).

The way we are learning to spell:

1. First, sound out the beginning sound and the end sound:

                l         l

2. Then, sound out any letter you recognize in the middle:

                   t t

3. Then try and sound out the missing vowels a-e-i-o-u (always in red colour)

                              l i tt l

4. Finally, using your clues look for the word in your personal dictionary and provide the correct spelling:

                              to get: little
