Please Cover Your Sneeze!
We read the book The Big Sneeze and we made 2D artwork and posted it on our bulletin board outside our classroom to create awareness
Martin Luther King Day, January 17th, 2011
In honour of Martin Luther King Day , we read the book The Crayon Box that Talked, about crayons of different colours getting along and the students drew their portraits on a crayon so we could make our own box.
Let's get Reading Prizes!
For the Let's get Reading program, I was hoping you could help me gather up gift certificates/gifts to encourage the children to participate in this classroom program.
So if you know anyone (restauranteur, business owner) who may want to donate a gift certificate, new books/used books in good condition, or writing material (ie: pencil crayons) to the classroom for a great cause, it would be greatly appreciated!

Let's get Reading!
What are these green folders!!
Yes, I have sent a green folder with your child. This folder is part of the home reading program. Children should be reading 4 books a week, actually more if possible, but they only have to report on four (4).
We have filled out the form in class so students know what I am looking for:
-Title and Author of the book
-A picture of what the book is about (I know the space is small...)
-Three (3) words they already know -these are their spelling words (they are in their agenda's)
-Three (3) NEW words from the book
and finally, one sentence on what the book was about.
In their sentence, I am looking for:
-Capital at the beginning and period at the end
-if they used a spelling list word, they have to circle it
-and they have to colour the descriptive word if they used one.
At first your child will need some help but slowly encourage your child to fill out the form independently.

Characteristics of living things
Our visit to the Kortright centre in December was tied into our unit about
characteristics of living things.
Living things:
1. need food and water
2. grow
3. they make babies (reproduce)
4. they die
Living things also need shelter.
as well as seasonal changes:
We have talked about the four seasons, what is weather, what is temperature, and a thermometer.

Everyday Structures
We are going to start a new unit on 2d and 3d shapes. We are going to be building structures.
Structures are: playgrounds, furniture , buildings and natural structures (structures animals build). In these structures we see shapes: circles, squares, triangles.
When you are out and about with your child, point out the shapes you see such as square windows, round man holes, etc. to make your child become aware of all the shapes that are around us.
Check out this amazing website:

Money
At the moment we are working on Money. We have been sorting coins:
1c, 5c, 10c, and 25c
Students need to identify them by their names: pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.
We are going to start adding to 20c (only!)
Things you can do to help your child:
1. put a bunch of 1c, 5c, and 10c coins out and ask your child how many ways he/she can make 20c. We have been doing this in class.
2. let your child identify the coins by looking for the maple leaf, the beaver, the sailboat and the moose.

Spelling
We are learning how to spell!
The spelling lists are for students to memorize what we call "high frequency" words such as: the, they, that, one, on, said, came, because, etc. All these appear in text over and over again which means that the sooner students learn them the smoother their reading will be because they will be able to read them automatically. The spelling lists also contain words that are not easy to spell by only sounding out for example: because, who, came (the question is always, does it start with a c or a k?).
The way we are learning to spell:
1. First, sound out the beginning sound and the end sound:
l l
2. Then, sound out any letter you recognize in the middle:
t t
3. Then try and sound out the missing vowels a-e-i-o-u (always in red colour)
l i tt l
4. Finally, using your clues look for the word in your personal dictionary and provide the correct spelling:
to get: little

January -Writing
What I am looking for when your child is writing sentences in their homework book:
-Capitals at the beginning of each sentence and a period to mark the end of the sentence. When you child is done writing the sentence, encourage your child to trace these in another colour. eg. It is time for me to go to bed.
-I would also like students to start using more descriptive words in their sentences. We are going to start writing about animals so I am looking for something like this:
eg. The cow goes moo and has a tail.
-Lastly, I am looking for proper spelling of our spelling words. I would like to see students use the words we have been learning as part of our spelling words. Those words are all on our word wall in the classroom and also in their agendas so they can refer back to them when doing homework.
