Use a kitchen timer!!
Make sure your choose a time that is good for both of you so either before or after dinner or maybe just before bed.
Start with a couple of minutes, even if you child is not done his/her work/reading tell your child the time is up.
Then increase one or two minutes until the child builds 10 to 15 minutes of sitting down and doing work or even just reading for 15 minutes.
Make sure you don't push your child to sit for more than 15 minutes at a time. They can always finish their work the next day.
Make sure they pat their own back and get a bear hug from you when they have completed their work!

We are celebrating Black History Month (February)
To celebrate Black History Month we read Anansi stories, a West African and Caribbean Folktale. We wrote in sentences what our favourite part was as well as created our own Spiders in 2d and 3d.

Look at our writing work-we are working on inferencing
Inferencing means predicting which is really just a fancy name for guessing. However, our guesses have to based on something...
Teaching the difference between b and d
1) Tell your child that the in order to write the d they have to make a c first and then add the l
to make d
2) the other one is b see's d (bcd)
see if that works

We are learning about Data Management and Probability
We are starting a new math unit, Data Management and Probability.
In this unit, your child will be learning about making graphs and probability –how likely it is that an event will happen.
The Learning Goals for this unit are:
-Compare, sort, and organize objects into real-life graphs
-Ask questions, collect, and record gathered information on graphs.
-Read graphs and ask questions about information on the graphs.
-Decide whether an event will happen always, sometimes, or never.
You can help your child reach these goals by:
-Sorting small objects of two colours (blue and green buttons). What do we have more of, the blue or green? Use a chart to help you "see" it.
-Have your child ask family members to name their favourite vegetables and create a graph (ie. how many people like carrots more than celery?)
